Lydia looked around, annoyed and angry. Liza Jane had made quite a mess of her room in finding her clothing and bringing it down to her. Though she had to admit between all the excitement and her illness she had rather fallen out of her usual neat habits.

From the bottom of the wardrobe she brought a thin portfolio where she kept her few important papers. The letter from the Angel Employment Agency was not there. She shifted through all the papers twice, checked the back of each, rechecked the portfolio to make sure nothing had been left behind. The letter was not there.

She tried her portmanteau next and dumped out the few odds and ends that she still had not found a permanent home for in her room. Once glance was enough to show the letter couldn’t be there either. She carefully checked all the seams of the lining to make sure it couldn’t have somehow slipped inside. But every seam was tight and whole.

She rifled through all her books, went through every pocket she owned. She had a bad moment when she wondered if the letter could have been in the pocket of either the dress that had sank in the lake or the white and purple one Mrs. Primfield had surely already burned to prevent the gore on it from smelling up the kitchen. But she could think of no reason why she would have taken the letter along with either dress.

It must still be here! She fought down a twisting worm of panic and began systematically searching every inch of the room, under furniture, bed, mattress, everywhere. If she couldn’t find the letter would Lord Blackburn think she was some kind of thief, adventuress, murderess? Nonsense! He was too sensible a man to believe his cousin’s farfetched musings. What had Jamie Farris against her to be putting those ideas in everyone’s mind? Sir Yessum was the obvious villain. He had already attacked Lord Blackburn in front of witnesses. Wasn’t that enough?

The room was in worse shape than ever and she wanted to scream or cry with frustration. Would nothing go right for her? Looking up, she saw Lord Blackburn standing in the doorway, watching her. “You were taking a long time. Jamie was worried you might be up here forging some kind of document.”

“Ha! As you see, I am not.” She motioned around the messy room.

“Yes, I see. Have you found the letter?”

“No. I swear to you I did receive it just as I said. Do you think I just wander the length of England, looking for noble houses where the education of the offspring is so poorly neglected as to border on abuse?” She saw him wince at the last word. It had been undiplomatic of her. Just like her last dinner with her brother and sister, she had let passion overrule good sense. If she hadn’t, then she might still be living comfortably in the vicarage she had known all her life. Well, maybe life
